Israel: Language Coordinator (Internship)

Hours/week: 20 hours per week, 12:00-18:00 Sunday-Thursday

Supervisory responsibility: 10 teachers

Reports to: Education Program Manager

Location: South Tel Aviv

Organization and Program Background:The African Refugee Development Center (ARDC) is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 by refugees and Israeli citizens to assist, support, and empower refugees and asylum seekers in Israel. The ARDC seeks to ensure access to basic social services, and to facilitate refugee and asylum seeker integration, self-sufficiency and ownership in matters affecting their lives. The ARDC advocates for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers and for a humane and fair Israeli asylum policy.

The Practical Refugee Education Program (PREP) supports refugee and asylum seeker adults by providing access to educational programs. Our programs are designed to help those desiring to improve language and communication skills, and pursue higher education options in order to increase self-esteem, promote self-sufficiency, and facilitate integration into Israeli society.

Scope of Position:The Language Coordinator oversees the English and Hebrew classes offered in the evenings. He/She acts as the main ARDC contact for teachers and students, manages curriculum development and the monitoring and evaluation of student progress.

Main Responsibilities:

· Recruit and train English and Hebrew teachers (each semester)

· Enroll and evaluate adult students for classes

· Develop and maintain data and monitoring and evaluation systems for semester

· Act as the liaison between the Language program and the greater organization

· Act as a resource for teachers and assist with classes when necessary

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

· Comfortable working with refugees and asylum seekers from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills

· Fluent English is mandatory, Hebrew is an advantage

· Ability to adapt to changing situations, comfortable working in a fast-paced, demanding environment

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

· Responsible, flexible, and dedicated

· Occasionally able to work until 19:30.
